Day 1
After a long journey, which started at 6 o’clock in the morning, we arrived in Hastings, England. There we went uphill with special lifts which date from 1889. After a short walk we were on top of some beautiful cliffs. We climbed down the cliffs and then we had some free time to explore the town. Hastings is a former fishing port and is known for its tall net huts, tall little houses for storing fishing nets, and for the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Then we went to Southwick to meet our host families.
Day 2
The second day started with three hours of English lessons at a language school. These lessons were about collocations and poems. After lunch, we set of towards Arundel castle, but when we arrived it was closed. We had some free time in Arundel. Then we went to the Tangmere Aviation Museum. Here we got a guided tour and learned about the history of England. After that we went back to the host families.
Day 3
We went to the Seven Sisters Cliffs. Here we got a geography lesson about the formation of cliffs. It was mister Smit’s very last lesson! After a picnic we went to Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. This is a beautiful pavilion with influences from India, China and England. Then we had some free time in Brighton. After that we went to a cinema to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean.
Day 4
Wednesday we went to Bourne Community College. Here we followed three lessons in different subjects. Everyone got a buddy with which they followed their normal lessons. There were many differences. All people wear school uniforms for example. They also have a subject about cooking and the school is a lot smaller. You can also buy a hot school lunch. After the lessons we went into Chichester together with our school buddies.
Day 5
Thursday was our last day so we hadn’t got much time left to do something because of the journey back. But before we left, we went to reproduction of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. This is a perfect replica which was painted in 1988 by Gary Bevans, who thought his church was a bit too boring. And started painting the ceiling. This took him 5 years! After that we set off for the journey back. Just before the border we had lunch at the Pizzahut because we wouldn’t be back in time for dinner. After the lunch we went through the tunnel between Folkestone and Calais, back to the Netherlands.
